The 8 Worst Game Character Makeovers Ever

Join GamePro as we name the fugliest game character makeovers of all time!

It's a normal process--video game characters are constantly changing. From Mario to Marcus Fenix, characters always undergo visual facelifts in order to "update" the series' look. The good news is that, more often than not, game character makeovers are subtle and we don't even notice that new mole on the side of Chola the Chipmunk's cheek or whatever other tweak is made to our favorite characters. But good taste is not always used when these changes are made. Read on as GamePro identifies the eight most terrible game character makeovers we've ever seen.

#8: Solid Snake

"The Mullet" introduced in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

From Metal Gear Solid to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, you won't notice a vast difference in the evolution of the series' raspy-voiced protagonist. A little more stubble here, a few more creases on the skin there, but wait. Upon closer inspection you'll notice that the only real change made to Solid Snake in MGS2 is that he now donned the dreaded mullet. And while Snake's Alabama rat's nest isn;t as defined as, say that of Billy Ray Cyrus', it's still scary enough to see him with this attached to his head. To quote the late musician Wesley Willis: cut the mullet!

#7: Link

"Toon Link" introduced in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was, and still is, a great game. Nobody's disputing that here. And while everyone's favorite Hyrulian in white tights has never been a character you could accurately describe as "manly," the cartoonization of Link felt like the hero was emasculated just a bit too much. In fact, it took just many a gamer some time to get used to Link's new somewhat deformed look.

#6: Lara Croft

"B-Cups" introduced in Tomb Raider Legend

To prove that Tomb Raider's iconic female archaeologist is more than just a top heavy Englishwoman in hiking boots, the series' developers forced their lovely protagonist to undergo a drastic surgical procedure. In Tomb Raider Legend, Lara emerged equipped with what could be compared to tangerines in place of what was once more akin to honeydews. But the game was good, and that's all that matters... right?

#5: Sub-Zero

"Mask-Less Sub-Zero" introduced in Mortal Kombat 3

The tradeoff: a sleek blue and black Ninja fit in exchange for no mask, greasy slicked back hair, and the world's largest suspenders. One thing was for sure, Sub-Zero's new look in Mortal Kombat 3 made the decision of picking between playing as him and Scorpion that much easier. And what's with that red smear across his entire face? Since when did human flesh scar that way?

I didn't even bother with the second page yet because, FINALLY it has been brought to the gaming world's attention that the mask-less Sub-Zero SUCKS!!! That felt soooooo good.

Aegis

I don't know what Kojima was thinking about when he thought Snake should have a mullet.

Maskless Sub-Zero sucks. But I like the new Lara Croft character model. And those are not B-cups. Definitely C. Still, it's a little more believable that she can be nimble and jump through tombs with a C cup than with the ridiculous double D's she had before.
